Navigation and menus

How ÉLAN uses your Shopify menus: the header bar, the Index menu with preview images, footer menus, the account menu and the country and language selectors.

Theme version 1.0.0Updated

On this page

ÉLAN reads your menus from Online Store → Navigation. Edit links there; the theme shows them.

The main menu

  • The Header section’s Menu setting uses Main menu by default.
  • On large screens, the first four top-level links appear in the header bar when Show menu links in the bar is on. Keep top-level names short (one or two words) so they fit.
  • The Index button opens the full menu on every screen size. It shows up to three levels: menu items, their children and their grandchildren. Items with children expand in place.

To build a three-level menu, nest links in Online Store → Navigation by dragging a link under another one.

Preview images in the Index

As customers move through the Index, a large image beside the menu changes with each item. The image comes from, in this order:

  1. A Preview image block in the Header section whose Menu item name matches the menu item’s title. Matching ignores upper and lower case.
  2. For a collection link: the collection’s image.
  3. For a product link: the product’s first image.
  4. The header’s Default preview image.

To add one:

  1. Select the Header section and choose Add block → Preview image.
  2. Type the menu item’s title exactly as it appears in your menu, for example Knitwear, in Menu item name.
  3. Choose an Image.

The Index has its own Color scheme under The Index in the header settings.

Sticky and transparent header

SettingWhat it does
Sticky headerOff, On scroll up (the header returns when the customer scrolls up) or Always.
Transparent over the home page openingLays the header over the first section of the home page. Choose an Overlay color scheme that reads well on your image.
Show predictive searchSuggests products, collections and pages while customers type in search.

Add a Menu block to the Footer section for each column, and give it a Heading. The first footer menu uses your Footer menu by default. Add Text blocks for short notes, such as studio hours.

Customer account menu

When customer accounts are on (Settings → Customer accounts), an account icon appears in the header and opens Shopify’s account menu. Choose its links with the header’s Customer account menu setting.

Country and language selectors

When you sell in more than one country (Settings → Markets) or language (Settings → Languages), selectors appear in the footer and in the Index. Turn them off in the footer with Show country and language selectors.

Accessibility built in

  • The Index is a dialog: it keeps keyboard focus inside while it’s open, closes with Escape, and returns focus to the button that opened it.
  • A “Skip to content” link is the first thing keyboard users reach on every page.
